An overview and brief history of Papyrology as a discipline: its origin in Greek documents from Egypt, its spread through Demotic, Coptic, Latin and Arabic languages and cultures, the relevant progress it consented in understanding the everyday life of the ancient people and in the knowledge of their literature, their social and economic predicament, and their struggles.

While we all agree that the history of a specific group or sub-group of people can only be done through all the sources referred to that group, a selection of Latin and bilingual Latin-Greek documents mostly referred to Roman Egypt, but also Roman North Africa, can elucidate how women dealt with their lives under Roman rule - especially, how they lived in the new legal framework provided by Roman law.
